That is australia's largest monitor 'perentie'. That wouldnt be fully grown. Not all goannas run up trees, the ridge tail monitor is a terristrial goanna but will climb a tree if in danger. This goanna could rip of a finger off if it wanted to. Goannas arnt venomous, the bacteria in the saliver is like venom but it isnt.......Thats a beauty of a goanna !

In Oz, they call all monitor lizards "goannas." They have many species there. This type is the biggest in Oz, the "Perentie," Varanus giganteus. It does indeed get to be 7-8 feet long, and has a beautiful skin pattern.
Saw a NatGeo show some years ago w/a big one attacking a big venomous snake, it just gripped it by the tail&, using it's long neck for incredible torque, whipped the snake so violently it was dead in 2 seconds. Amazing.

I think everyone in Los Angeles LOVES Huell Howser, I know I do! Thank you peterm3964 for identifying the creature. And I especially thank panchovilllla for posting this outstanding video of a remarkable man and an interesting creature in Australia.

Hi thats a GOANNA .. they run up trees to escape danger , and have been known to run up people because the mistake the person for a tree ..the bit from a GOANNA is not poisonous , but the wound can recur seasonally . The GOANNA can get about half as big again as this specimen .. a big one is about seven feet long they are not dangerous but man can they scratch .
