I've read many stupid comments on youtube, but to say EC is doing an impression of Paul Young is among the most ridiculous. Who was he doing an impression of when he wrote the lyrics--Daryl Hall?

Genius! this song absolutely captures the mood of the north of England. A sad and poigniant tale but still beautiful in every sense. Robert Wyatts version is truly moving.Long live true English poetry.

Sorry, I find this really poor! It's just a bad Paul Young impression with the vibrato ladled on for the required pathos. Give me the Bob Wyatt version anyday...

EC has become such an accomplished singer as he's gotten older. He used to just spit the lyrics out with all the bile and venom he could muster (and it was ample) but his voice really serves his increasingly more ambitious arrangements well. He was simply magnificent on both Painted By Memory and North, not just as a rock singer but as a singer period.

Thanks for the video! Did you know that Squeeze, from the same genre of music, is going to be touring North America in the Summer of 2007 and the UK later in the year? Tickets for the North American dates are available on the Ticketmaster website.

This has always been one of my favorite EC songs. I wasn't sure how much I'd like it without Chet Baker's beautiful trumpet solos--but of course, Steve Nieve comes through.
