But in his day he mixed with Royals and Movie Stars, he attracted the type of fame later only known to Elvis, the Beatles, and by todays standards Beckham. Jack Doyle was one of the first world icons. Not too bad for a lad from the 'Holy Ground'.

Alledged punches below the belt. He continued to fight in the states and got into making movies because of his great looks and while there courted some of the wealthiest women in the world. He really was a ladies man, and once knocked out Clark Cable in a fracas because of a woman. But by the bottle he did fall, and ended up in London a shadow of the man he once was. Poor and destitute.

He was from Cobh, left school at 12 and 5'11 and 13st. Went to work humping coal from the barges, at 17 he lied about his age and joined the british army to help support his family back in Cork. Started boxing and beat everything the British army had to put against him. Including former B army heavyweight champs. And still he continued to beat all. He was bought out of army service by promoters of the day and within two years was fighting for the Heavyweight british title. He lost be default!

As great as she was / is, there can be no comparison to what Jack had acheived and to be fair no one from Cobh, Cork, or Ireland as a whole has come near to Jack.

I have had the pleasure of seeing Christy and Declan in my home town of Derry, what a show by two amazing musicians and two national treasures. Keep it up Christy and Declan, hope to see you back in Derry again soon.
