I have stainless steel track and clean if with a cleaning car(mild abrasive). I have operated trains after shower with no problems. I have a snow plow and intend to operate in winter as others do.

NICE start... but I've always been afraid to switch to garden railroad, because of the rain. How bad does it get with the weather on keeping your track clean and dry?

You are moving lots of dirt it looks like. Always a mile post to get a single line of track open! You have the start of a great looking layout. How is your back? Your track looks well laid without vertical or horizontal kinks and pretty level as well. Not everyone seems to be able to lay track level.

I think you have the two direction cables switched. Because when you had it moving forward, it gave the signale for backwards, it should be two toots forward, three back.
