THE WAR, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. This exclusive, revelatory "first look" at THE WAR and its creation provides excerpts from the series, insights from the on-screen participants, behind-the-scenes looks at the production and thoughts from co-producers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick on the critical importance of creating this series atthis time.
During the preview, you'll see some of the work that went into making the seven-part documentary about World War II. Excerpts are introduced by interview footage of the filmmakers or participants in the film.
Germany and Japan were linked by treaty, so to take on Japan meant that Germany would in turn take on America. Therefore, when the USA declared war on Japan for the bombing, Germany fulfilled its obligation and declared war on the United States. So, Suprkit's remark, though loaded, is correct. America's involvement in Europe was preceded by the Axis powers declaring war on her first.

why limit the parts and why not get into more detail with personal sides...think about howmany people want to see more than a large gun firing or a boat sinking and getdown to who is who and what they love to do...basketball in high school or band....why limit this great generation to parts...keep making parts and tell the in depth story of each and every soldier or sweetheartthat help us win the war.respectfully, r0n

this was just broadcasted in finnish television during summer months. i watched every episode, and IMO this is the best series ever made. Finland was fighting on an opposing side of USA from 1941, although they didnt have any operations upon each other.

I am half russian and I deeply admire my Grandmother's bravery when she grew up in Kiev. This war changed everything, and it still affects us to this day.

To me the best opening to this documentary is episode 2.When they read the editorial of the Septemper 23, 1943 issue of LIFE Magazine.I cry so much when I read it.I believe every American should read it because it makes you think how lucky we are today.

The real thing of war ios getting yourself down there killing or being killed yourself. Without Barely escaping.Thats a very powerful statement of war.
