That is to say, they frame the content for themselves. It is up to the interpreter to appreciate art by articulating an appreciation of the art and not by having a ready made appreciation dictated to them.

After reading your comment it is not clear that you understand the criticism being put forth.

Inserting questions serves to steer the audience's interpretation. That isn't an artist endeavour. A novelist for instance, doesn't stop in mid story to comment on the development of the story. That is the task of the reader. Art is always a relationship between the artist and the interpreter. It is the task of the interpreter to make sense of the content themselves.

When its reduced to a simple formula, then yes, form trumps content. Take the example Ira gives, 'there is a quiet house' rather dull. However, when inserted into the formula/framework it may become interesting. The interest is a reflection of the framework and not the quiet house. No one suggested the content changes, its just made irrelevant.

That said, no one took issue with Ira's storytelling but rather the 'moment of reflection', which is a device to manipulate interpretation.

This is great stuff. Very encouraging that I have been doing what Ira notes as essential (anecdote/reflect) naturally, without actually being able to stick a label on it. Now I see where else I can go with it&am even more driven to keep writing. Thanks for uploading!

I don't think you understand what's going on here.
Take any random nonfiction story. There is a way you could tell this story that would make it sound more uninteresting than it is. Or, you could tell the same story with all the same true facts in a way that would keep a reader's attention. Form doesn't trump content; it's more like putting a nice frame on a painting with rough edges. Much nicer to look at. This is the art here. Nothing changes about the information presented.

I know what he's saying.
I've known what an anecdote was since 7th grade.
Then again, maybe it makes sense to me because I am a journalist. Let's stick to what we know.
